This website will provide annual bear and deer harvest statistics for the recent year, and annual boar harvests since 1979, as well as additional interesting information.

The 2004 season harvest included 1,235 black bears and 193,480 deer (down from 231,221 harvested in 1999, but less than the 1997 record of 235,305). In addition, boar statistics, presented from 1979 to 2000, totaled 46 for the year 2000, and 1,630 boar for the period of 1979 through 2000.

The black bear population for West Virginia is estimated at ~10,000.  The deer population is estimated at 890,000 (based on a two-year average of harvested bucks as 10% of the total population).

Among other furbearers, fishers, re-introduced into the state starting in 1969,have greatly expanded their range, including PA and MD.

Small game, including snowshoe hare, squirrel and cottontail, are not recorded.
